FAQ
The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) seeks donations to enhance its ability to deliver on its mandate as a key hub for multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation. While UNOG is primarily funded through assessed contributions from Member States and also receives some funds through cost-recovery for services provided to other UN entities, voluntary donations play a crucial role in enabling the Office to go the extra mile. In the past, donations have supported digital transformation, infrastructure upgrades and our ability to fulfill unfunded mandates, such as enhancing accessibility or reducing our environmental footprint.
Donors can choose to support projects through earmarked funding and our institutional giving website provides an overview of causes in need of support. For projects, the details of how the funds will be used are laid out in mutually agreed funding documents which have contractual status. Our individual giving page gives you the opportunity to donate as little as 3 USD. Every year, the Director of Administration will approve the use of the funds raised through individual unearmarked donations, based on an internal process. UNOG adheres to strict UN financial rules and reporting standards and is regularly subjected to internal audits by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) and to external audits by the United Nations Board of Auditors.
No, the UN reserves the right to refuse donations from individuals or entities not in line with the UN’s values. A due diligence procedure is applied, in line with our internal Guidelines for Acceptance of Voluntary Contributions to UNOG Trust Funds.
Absolutely, this is possible. Contact us at: donate.ungeneva@un.org.
Yes, co-funding projects is possible. The scale of the project and, as a consequence, the funding amount can also often be adjusted to your available budget. Please contact us at donate.ungeneva@un.org indicating the amount or share you wish to contribute and if you already have a partner with whom you would like to team up. Our donation team may have received other proposals for partial funding and is ready to explore the available options together with you.
Donors of projects, including Member States, private companies or foundations, may be mentioned in speeches, at opening ceremonies, on the website or in the annual report. Meeting rooms that were renovated with the help of donations may have a plaque acknowledging the contribution. All donors will also receive thank you messages from UNOG. If a donor prefers not to be mentioned, this preference will be respected.
Donors are not authorized to use the name, emblem, or official seal of the United Nations or any abbreviation of the name of the United Nations in connection with their business (or otherwise) without the prior written permission of the United Nations in each case. Authorization will not be provided to use the name, emblem, or official seal of the UN for commercial purposes. Donors have to ensure that their employees and contractors comply with these provisions.
UNOG charges programme support costs at a standard rate of 7% and the amount will be retained from the total donation and used to cover indirect costs of the projects.
No, due to its status, UNOG is unable to provide tax deduction letters to donors. However, all donations will be acknowledged with a thank you note.
Yes, in-kind donations to UNOG may be possible, but they are subject to specific policies and procedures. Gifts to the organization have to align with the UN’s mission and values and may not create legal or financial liabilities. A typical example are art donations. Proposals should be submitted to the Cultural Activities Committee and have to be approved by the Director-General. Donors have to cover all the related costs for shipment and installation, maintenance and removal. Please contact donate.ungeneva@un.org to find out more about the Standard Operating Procedure for Acceptance of Artwork and Artefact Donations.
